| History
From small beginnings and with the blessing of
God, the Pullman Evangelical Free Church grew into what we are
today: a fellowship made alive in Christ with every intention
of continuing the work God has begun in us.
In 1969, six families began meeting on Sunday evenings
for worship, singing and Bible study at the home of Walt and Elinor
Butcher. The small assembly grew, and sought more space at the
Whelan Grange Hall. They then began meeting regularly on Sunday
mornings. Elmer Hiebert was the pastor. Attendance began at 25,
but grew rapidly.
They talked about organizing officially as a church. A suggestion
was made to contact the Free Church. Dave Enarson, the District
Superintendent for the Northwest area, met with them and informed
them of the requirements for joining. Soon thereafter, in 1971,
they formed our fellowship: the Community Evangelical Free Church
of Pullman, Washington.
During the 1970s, Jim Wilson moved to the area
and helped to start a literature ministry under sponsorship of
Inland Christian Laymen (ICL), an organization that Pastor Hiebert
founded in the 60s. One
Way Books in Pullman and Crossroads Bookstore in Moscow were
started, and Jim became our principal pastor after Pastor Hiebert
moved to Tempe, Arizona, to start a bookstore and campus ministry.
Doug Busby came in 1976 to start the School of Practical Christianity
for ICL. He also helped teach at our church. When Pastor Wilson
started the Evangelical Free Campus Fellowship, Doug became our
lead pastor.
In October of 1989, we signed a lease on the present
building located at 1234 South Grand Avenue in Pullman. This allowed
us to have a “full time” facility from which to minister.
After some remodeling, the building was ready for occupation in
late January 1990.
In September of 1990 Jeff Lawton was named as Youth
Pastor, and the Youth Program
grew under his guidance. Tina Sipp joined the staff in 1995 as
the coordinator for various church ministries. In 2003, Paul Dean
began serving in the capacity of Director of Children’s
Ministry. With Tina's departure in August of 2003, Debbie
Hulbert came on board as the church secretary. Shawn Newberry
also joined the staff to serve as Youth Pastor. In 2005 Caesar Paul joined the staff as Pastor of Adult Ministries to
better serve the growing needs of the congregation.
We are a body of believers made alive in
Christ. We can testify to the goodness and providence of our God.
Whether you are already a member of our church, attend occasionally,
